Is Espresso Stronger than Coffee? | Caffeine Myths

September 8, 2018 By Ryan A. Guess Leave a Comment

If you are a Coffee lover, then you would probably know how an Espresso and a normal coffee is prepared. But what about caffeine level used up in both the coffee types?

Only a few people understand such a thing. And that’s what led me to write an article to bust out the myths related to the Espresso!

One of the popular myths relates to the caffeine level in the Espresso. So let’s find out the truth about how much caffeine is entering your body.

By the end of the post, you could also understand whether Espresso is stronger than normal coffee.

Is Espresso Stronger than Coffee?

Types of Espresso Machines

You all are aware of a normal coffee, the one which is made at homes using the normal method or the Drip Coffee Maker.

Coming to the Espresso, not all the people are completely aware of the content and preparations. So, starting off with a brief intro on Espresso Coffee.

Espresso Coffee

Espresso is not the name of any company preparing coffee, instead, it is the preparation method. Yes, it is a unique method of preparing coffee, and if you don’t know the process of Espresso then you hardly know what the Coffee Maker actually does.

For Espresso coffee making, the coffee beans are collected and they are pressed against the machine to get finely ground coffee beans.

Later on, a cup of hot water is passed into the ground beans. Comparing this method with any basic coffee maker, the method remains the same. Both of them uses hot water, and it is added to the ground coffee beans. The main difference lies in how this hot water is added to the coffee beans.

In the normal coffee process, the hot water is added to the ground beans. Whereas, in the Espresso brewing, a pressurized hot water goes into the coffee beans.

That’s the first difference with the way Water is added to the coffee beans. And, the other major difference is the quantity of the water used in the making. For the normal brewing, we use about a liter of water, whereas for an Espresso shot-glass of water is used.

This is why the Espressos are found to be more concentrated and denser than the normal Coffee.

What about the Caffeine content in Espresso & Coffee?

That was about the making, now coming to the main point about the Caffeine level in an Espresso and a Drip Coffee. As the Espresso is darker and concentrated in texture, most of the users assume that the Espressos got a higher level of caffeine. But the truth is your Drip Coffee or the normal Brewed coffee got more Caffeine than the Espresso shots.

The level of the caffeine determines how strong or light your coffee is. This doesn’t mean that the drinks with dark texture got higher levels of caffeine.

Almost all the coffee drinks have a similar level of caffeine concentration, so what is that makes it differ in the later stages? There are a few factors like the temperature, saturation, grinding method, and the preparation time which may affect the caffeine level in the coffee.

Espressos are prepared using more ground coffee beans than for the normal brewing. As the number of coffee beans increases, the preparation time increase.

The espresso is boiled for more time than the normal coffee or the Drip one. Also, the Espresso is prepared in a saturated way. This actually allows extracting more caffeine out of the coffee.

So, chemically saying – Espresso got less caffeine quantity in them.

If you wish to enjoy coffee and keep the caffeine level low, then go for the Espresso shots. This is the right kind of Coffee shot you are looking for!
