How to Make Cold Brew Concentrate | DIY Homemade Barista Guide

Cold brew was not a big deal before, but people are now liking it.

Unlike the strong, bitter coffee, the cold brew coffee is milder, sweeter, and less on acidity level. With the coming summers, it would be cool to know the cold brew concentrate recipe. It’s super damn easy and doesn’t require a lot of materials too.

How to Make Cold Brew Concentrate

This guide will help you in making the best cold-brewed concentrate, just like the ones you buy at the cafes. Before, we get started with the cold brew coffee concentrate recipe – a few basics:

What is iced coffee concentrate?

This may confuse you. So, kindly focus.

By the standard definitions- Iced Coffee and the Cold Brew Coffee are not the same. There’s a tiny difference between both. Iced Coffee is prepared with brewing hot coffee and cooling it down. Whereas the Cold Coffee is prepared by working on coffee grounds without any heat.

However, both iced coffee concentrate or the cold brew concentrate these days refer to the same thing. For preparing this, coffee grounds are added to the water and left for steeping. You can add more ice, water, milk or cream into this, and enjoy the frozen drink.

Cold Brew Coffee vs Cold Brew Concentrate

Cold brew coffee is low-acidic, lightly shaded beverage which is served as the final product, on the other hand, the cold brew concentrate (it’s a concentrated coffee) requires to be diluted with milk or water.

Cold Brew Concentrate Recipe – Made Easy

Cold Brew Concentrate Recipe

Okay, so you are really on it huh! To know how to make cold brew concentrate, let’s first get a brief idea on the preparation and the materials needed for it.

i. Quick Summary

  • Cuisine: American
  • Diet Category: Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Vegetarian
  • Suitable Time for Drinking: Breakfast, Brunch, Drinks
  • Prep Time: 5 mins
  • Brewing Time: 12-24 hours

ii. Ingredients Required

You only need two things for making the best cold brew concentrate:

a. 10 ounces of coarsely ground coffee beans,

b. 40 ounces of filtered water

The resulting cold brew is entirely dependent on the quality of both the coffee and water. Choose only the coarse grind for the making the concentrate syrup just like the ones used for French Press coffee. Also, the water should be clean and of the best quality, you can get.

iii. Steps for Preparing the Concentrate

The instructions for preparing the cold brew concentrate recipe are given as follows:

  1. If you have a cold brew maker at home, you can prepare the concentrate on it. Else go with a large bowl or measuring jar/cup. (Steps remain the same for both, I would go with the cold brew maker method)
  2. Set the filter in the brewing container, do the needful fittings.
  3. Add the ground coffee.
  4. Now, pour the required amount of water in a circular style so that water gets evenly distributed on the grounds. Make sure you maintain the coffee concentrate ratio here.
  5. Once the coffee has all bloomed up, you can give it a gentle stir. Coffee grounds will expand, and bubbles will be formed here. That’s the quickest way to notice it.
  6. Rest down the concentrated coffee solution, and let the steeping work begin.
  7. Leave your brewer container for about 8 to 24 hours. Even 18 hours is a good brewing duration.
  8. Once you are done with the brewing, drain out the water and also filter out the coffee grounds.

The last point can be a bit difficult if you don’t have a cold brewing machine. You can also try making the concentrate on a French press, and carefully use the plunger for easy filtering.

Take the prepared cold press coffee concentrate in the same container or a glass carafe, and store it in the refrigerator. You can use it for 2 weeks, and prepare a variety of concentrated cold brew coffee recipes.

Some Foot-Notes

Some Foot-Notes

  • The coarse ground is the best suitable for making cold brew coffee concentrate. This prevents your drink from turning bitter.
  • Go slow with the straining process.
  • You can store the undiluted cold brew for a max. of 2 weeks, whereas the diluted one remains for 2 to 3 days only.
